Spenser sat back in her seat and let out a long breath as she stared at her office door. Ryker had slammed it so hard, she was kind of surprised the glass pane in the frame hadnât shattered. The level of emotion heâd just displayed shocked her. He seemed so cold and so aloof that he came across as completely devoid of emotion. She didnât know he was capable of such fire and heat.
What had Spenser so curious, though, was why he was so upset. He couldnât believe she would have shared sensitive information with him, did he? But more than that, what was it about the case that had him so upset to begin with? Why did he want to know the details of the murder so badly?
There was a soft knock on the door and then it opened, and Alice stuck her head inside. Spenser waved her in, and Alice closed the door behind her and took the seat Ryker had just vacated. She folded her hands primly in her lap and looked at Spencer with an expression of concern on her face.
âAre you all right, Sheriff?â she asked. âI saw Ryker leave in a huff.â
âYeah, Iâm fine. Thanks for checking up on me, though.â
âOf course,â she replied. âI know youâre just getting yourself settled here and thereâs suddenly a ton on your plate. I just donât want you to feel overwhelmed.â
âNo, Iâm good. I promise you.â
âAnd⦠and I just want to tell you that Ryker is a good man. Heâs troubled, but heâs a good man,â she said. âHe can be a bit rough around the edges and grumpy⦠and heâs not much of a people person⦠but underneath all that, heâs a very nice man.â
A soft smile touched Spenserâs lips. âOh, I know. Aside from this little outburst, heâs been kind to me. More or less,â she said, choosing to ignore their very first meeting. âAnd I know heâs got some issues. Iâm sympathetic, but I canât give him what he wanted.â
âIf I may be so bold, what was it he was asking for?â
âHe wanted all the details about the case we caught this morning,â Spenser said. âHe was insistent about wanting all the information weâve collected to this point. You wouldnât happen to know why he was so passionate about it would you?â
Alice looked down at her hands and sighed. Spenser could see she was struggling with the decision to tell her, or if so, how much to share. But she nodded to herself and raised her eyes to Spenserâs again.
âWhen Ryker was overseas, his fiancée was murdered. My understanding is, she was stabbed to death. This is according to his father, mind you,â Alice said softly. âThe fact that his father was telling people is one reason they had a falling out. Ryker didnât feel it was Evanâs place to be talking about that. I donât like to gossip or speak out of turn, Sheriff. Iâm only telling you this, so you understand him a little better.
